If you are using a Dell laptop, disconnect the battery from the computer.

NOTE: The CMOS battery cannot be reseated on all Dell laptops. Follow the steps below if the PSWD or RTCRST jumpers are not accessible on a Dell desktop or if you are using a Dell laptop. This process is applicable for both Dell desktops and laptops. The BIOS can be reset to factory defaults my reseating the CMOS battery that is connected to the system board.

Move the 2-pin jumper plug back to the password jumper.Disconnect the power cable from the computer.Plug the power cable to the computer and wait for 10 seconds for the CMOS to clear.Move the 2-pin jumper plug from the password jumper to the pins on the CMOS jumper.Locate the 2-pin CMOS jumper labeled RTCRST on the system board.Locate the 2-pin password jumper labeled PSWD on the system board.Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cable from the computer.Before you begin, follow the Safety Precautions When Working with Electronic and Electrical Equipment.For more information about jumper locations, see the User Manual of the Dell desktop. it the message comes back then that means the motherboard isn't reconizing the batteries and the motherboard would need to be replaced.NOTE: The location of the RTCRST and PSWD jumper varies between different Dell desktops. Now plug it back up and if the message stays away the problem is resolved. If the cmos checksum error comes back up then try a brand new battery, should be a 2032 battery and then go thru the same steps in setting the date and time and save changes and exit and if the message doesn't come back then unplug the system again and leave it unplugged for 5 minutes. Then after about 5 minutues plug the computer back up and turn it on and if the message doesn't come up then its resolved. Once you do that then go ahead and save the changes and exit.Īfter this go ahead and see if the CMOS exit checksum defaults comes up if not then go ahead and turn off the computer and unplug it. If it is then go ahead and get into the Bios and make sure the date and time is set properly. Make sure the battery your using is brand new. The BIOS ROM chip on the motherboard is probably faulty.

CMOS CHECKSUM CODE

This error means the contents of the BIOS code itself are damaged. This error is not the same as a CMOS Checksum Error, which refers to corrupted values of the CMOS settings, the ones you set through the BIOS setup program.
